Andy Yu:Me as a transferred student

Many years ago as a kid full of curiosity, I had the opportunity to cross half the globe to land on a whole new world. I didn’t know what to do nor what should be expected. Looking back at my days in foreign school, I could still recall many moments when I was questing for my competence, confidence and identity as well as leaning English.

“No homework” and “Party all night” etc. are snapshots of what many teenagers from China think of America. Like many of you are maybe wondering, is it really so? Based on what I’ve seen, I’m afraid I can not approve it, at least in my school, these stereotypes presented in movies and novels hardly exist. A lot of my friends, as many as I can think, are giving their best efforts to succeed in high school in order to stand out from the crowds, what’s unique is the value of success varies differently. Some of them are impressive musicians in acoustic club, some of them are ingenious programmers who are already able to get a job, some of them compete in state or national level of sports, and some of them are excellent leaders of associations. Universities and Colleges just do not simply focus on high academics of students for us to dig deeper in specialties. During classes, students are expected to be active participants who can succeed in both personal and group projects. It’s about learning through the exchange of ideas and perspectives as well as to present ourselves accurately, at the same time, improve the ability in socializing and cooperation with different kind of people. Another interesting phenomenon is that, students are expected to question teachers and even disagree, not just during lectures, student counsels are organized to be representatives of the student body when involves issues of school rules and regulations.
